Addiction Services provides free individual counselling for those trying to deal with an alcohol or drug misuse problem as well as for those impacted by a family member's substance misuse. Counselling is available for individuals, families and youth. This program is funded by the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, Fraser Health Authority.
The Addiction Services program offers specialized 8 week psycho-educational groups called Choices that run several times throughout the year. The Choices group is based on Smart Recovery principles which views substance misuse as a maladaptive coping strategy that can be changed through education, personal awareness and self motivation.
The Addiction Services counsellors assess client needs and provide referrals to appropriate groups and programs within the community including residential treatment. Emphasis is placed on matching client needs and preferences with the most appropriate residential treatment program. Some clients may prefer treatment programs that are 12-step orientated whereas others desire a wellness model focus. These programs can also be same sex only or mixed sex and vary in length from one to three months or longer.
Addiction Services provides school based presentations on drugs, addiction and even effective stress management techniques. Presentations can be specifically tailored to suit the needs of particular classrooms or groups. In addition professional development workshops related to substance misuse or addiction are available for a variety of professional and community groups upon request (604-538-2522).
The Addiction Services program sells urine based drug testing kits that are simple and easy to use. The single test kits can screen for drugs in the body such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and crystal methamphetamine and sell for only 6.42 each including tax. The multi-test kits can screen for up to 5 drugs at one time and are available for 20.00 each. Information on how to use the test kits along with drug detection times are included along with each test kit sold. Contact 604-538-2522 for additional information.
